Land Rover & Cartier United States Polo Team Returns Home with Victory


The Land Rover America’s Polo Cartier Team wins in Rome 8-5 at Roma Polo Club


 


 


WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 8, 2008)  The Land Rover America’s Cup Official USA Polo Team sponsored by Cartier & American Airlines traveled to Rome, Italy for a rematch this week.    At the America’s Polo Cup held at Historic Morven Park, in Leesburg, VA. May 10, 2008 – the USA Cartier Polo Team defeated the Eli Lilly Italian Polo Team by 6-2.  The Italians quickly called for a rematch after the game, and Tareq Salahi, USA Team Captain accepted the challenge in the Land Rover winners circle that afternoon. The US Polo Team has been in Rome, Italy since September 26 and has just returned on October 2nd. 


 


The Polo Match in Rome started with a Range Rover “Vogue” at centerfield position of the Roma Polo Club, for the first game ball throw in.  Michaele Salahi, co-founder of the America’s Polo Cup threw in the game ball from the black Range Rover; this was the first time a Vehicle was allowed on the prestigious polo field in Rome for a game ball throw in.   The Polo Match was fast paced, action packed and filled with aggressive plays from each side.  Tareq Salahi stated after the match “I am proud that the Land Rover America’s Cup Cartier Polo Team won the match with a final score of 8-5 in Rome.   It was an honor to be invited to play on Italys oldest polo field at the prestigious Roma Polo Club, which is nestled historically in the city center of Rome.  Even more special, was the true Italian hospitality shown to us by our new polo friends in Rome.  We may have won on the polo field, but the Italians won our hearts with their authentic and passionate hospitality!”  


 


The USA Polo Team is comprised of Tareq Salahi, from Hume, Virginia, Alan Nash from Warrenton, Virginia, Doug Barnes from Dallas, Texas and David King from Charlottesville, Virginia.  Total Handicap of the USA Polo Team delegation was 6 Goals.  The Team stayed at the famous Lord Byron Hotel in Rome, owned by Polo Player Stephanio Ottivani.


 


The Italian Team was comprised of Marco Elser, Massimio Elser, Stephanio Ottivani, Pedro Llorente at 6 Goals.


 


The next Land Rover America’s Polo Cup will take place on May 9, 2009 in Potomac, Maryland – with a Gala, Fashion Show and concert by American Idol star, Michaele Johns the evening before in Washington DC.  The Teams will be Australia vs. USA at 26 Goal Polo.
