Audi Drives Home with the Wanderers Cup
By Alex Webbe
Audi lead Barbarossa Leather through the game to score an 8-5 win and take top honors in the 2009 Wanderers Cup at the Grand Champions Polo Club in Wellington Sunday afternoon.
Audi received two goals by handicap and Stevie Orthwein added two more to it as they took an early 4-1 lead. Barbarossa Leather was held to a single goal from Luis Escobar in the opening chukker.
Goals from Audi team captain Melissa Ganzi and teammate Trevor Allen made it 6-1 after two chukkers, as the miserly Audi defense held Barbarossa Leather scoreless for the entire second period.
Juan Bollini made it 7-1 Audi in the third chukker before Charlie Muldoon scored a long neckshot in an effort to jump start the Barbarossa Leather offense, but that would be the last scoring of the chukker.
Barbarossa Leather and Audi battled through a scoreless fifth chukker, as shot after shot, by each team, went wide of the goal.
Escobar scored the first goal of the final chukker and Leo Mandelbaum added his second goal of the game, but it was a case of too little too late. The period ended with Audi holding on for the 8-5 win and the 2009 Wanderers Cup title.
