As the teams move into their second round of matches for the British Open Polo Championship for the Cowdray Gold Cup, it wasn’t just the weather heating up as we saw more exciting high goal action on the lawns of Cowdray park Polo club with wins for Jehangiri and Ferne Park.
Match 1:
First up, Vere Harmsworth’s Ferne Park sealed their first win of the tournament beating Kazak 15-12 in an exciting battle. Ferne Park had the advantage going into halftime after a strong 3rd chukka saw them begin to pull away on the scoreline. They were just that second quicker, making snap decisions and quick team plays that helped them lead in terms of ball possession. While Kazak made a great comeback after halftime, 4 goals to 1 bringing it back to a 1 goal ball game, Ferne Park was deadly accurate from the penalty line scoring 100% of their opportunities and they were just able to keep in front of the Kazak side despite impressive plays from both teams. Both teams are now 1 and 1 after the second round.
Match 2:
Jehangiri Polo celebrated their first Gold Cup win on their second outing, defeating La Magdeleine 13-10 in a convincing performance. Cavanagh and Pieres worked well together to create positive, territory gaining plays which resulted in 7 field goals and also helped to create penalty scoring opportunities with La Magdeleine falling into the trap and fouling 13 times. The damage was done in the first half with Jehangiri going into halftime 8-3 up and even a 5 goal chukka from La Magdeleine in the 5th wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.
