Gold Cup – Day 12 Third Round of Qualifiers

It was the day of the comebacks on Saturday 5th July as 1 match was nearly toppled by a last minute comeback and the other went to overtime, much to the delight of the crowds at Cowdray Park Polo Club.

Match 1:

A great comeback in the penultimate chukka was almost enough to create an upset in the first match. Bangash Polo Team came out strong in this match, piling on the pressure, but as we all know, Cambiaso’s speciality is ramping up the performance just when it matters and this match was another showcase of this. Falling behind going into the 3rd La Dolfina/ Scone turned it up, blocking any attacking advances from Bangash to leave them goalless in the 3rd and 4th. Bangash didn’t give up though and 4 goals in the 5th put them back on top, but once again La Dolfina/ Scone pulled it out of the bag, proving themselves to be the seamless organisation they are to score 3 unanswered goals in the last and seal the victory.

Match 2:

The audience were treated to another extra chukka match in the second game of the day after a thrilling match ended in a final chukka comeback from Sujan Indian Tigers which took everyone by surprise and pushed the match into overtime. Ferne Park played a consistent game, never seeming rattled as they sent home 6 goals from the field and 5 from the penalty line. They did however give away some opportunities to Sujan Indian Tigers who scored 80% of their penalties. 10-7 going into the last it seemed like a done deal for Ferne Park, but a herculean effort from the Tigers saw them score 3 unanswered goals in the last to equalise and push to overtime. Unable to keep the momentum going it was Ferne Park who stole the victory with a golden goal to take their second win of the tournament so far.
