Goose Creek beats The
Four Seasons in OT thriller
By Alex Webbe
Goose Creek (Maureen Brennan, Nick Johnson, Tano Vial and
Cote Zegers) bounced back from a 4-3 halftime advantage to score a 7-6 overtime
win over The Four Seasons (Kaiser Makaar, Mason Wroe, Luis Escobar and Chris
Nevins) in the 14-goal Freebooters Classic at the International Polo Club
Tuesday afternoon.
Luis Escobar scored the first goal of the game followed by
another goal from the field from teammate Mason Wroe for a 2-0 start. Goose Creek’s Cote Zegers closed out the
chukker with a 40-yard penalty shot for a goal. The
Four Seasons, however, held the 2-1 lead.
Wroe’s second goal of the game had The Four Seasons on top,
3-1, but Goose Creek stormed back with consecutive goals to knot it up at
3-3. Zegers converted a 60-yard penalty
shot for a goal and Tano Vial added a goal from the field.
Defense was the order of the day for The Four Seasons in the
third as they shut down the Goose Creek attack.
A single goal from Chris Nevins was the only scoring in the period as
The Four Seasons rode off the field at the end of the first half with the
narrow 4-3 advantage.
The two teams traded goals in the fourth chukker with Vial
scoring twice for Goose Creek while The Four Seasons got single goals from
Kaiser Makaar and Escobar. After four
periods of play The Four Seasons were leading, 6-5.
Both teams put up their best defensive efforts in the
fifth. Zegers scored the only goal of
the period on a 40-yard penalty conversion.
With one chukker left in regulation pay it was all even at 6-6.
Seven minutes of the most vigorously contested polo of the
day took place in the sixth chukker.
Races up and down the field went for naught as the final horn sounded
without a goal being scored in the 6-6 tie.
After a brief intermission both teams returned to the field for
the sudden-death overtime chukker. Both
teams pressed but a mistake by The Four Seasons resulted in a foul. Zegers converted for his fourth penalty goal
of the day for the 7-6 overtime win for Goose Creek.
Zegers scored all four of his game-high four goals on
penalty shots, including the game winner.
Vial added three goals from the field for the victory. Escobar and Wroe scored two goals each for
The Four Seasons. Makaar and Nevins
added single goals in a losing effort.
Three games into the 2014 Freebooters Classic 14-goal
tournament at the International Polo Club and all three teams (Goose Creek, The
Four Seasons and Santa Clara) have identical 1-1 records thru the first round
of play.
