Just One Yard
One had to keep one’s head down and one’s helmet on tight with the number of high speed three ounce spheroids flying about the Oldford polo ground at today’s match. During the first chukker six screaming near goal shots were counted no farther that one yard from a score by the Gold squad led by `Freight Train Butler and ably supported by The Boys Kiyonaga, Rockin’ Rory and yours truly, American Idol. Red seemed to be reserving their fire for later chukkers. as the first period score remained an unexciting 0 – 0.
In the second Fright Train blasted through the thin defense of the Reds led by Coach Gillespie with his troopers Canadian Gent, Celtic Lass and Julia. His solitary goal would be all the scoring action for the second chukker .
The third period saw Julia rescue the ball from a melee in front of the goal and cleverly slip it through for Reds’ first goal. Annoyed by this defensive breach, Freight Train proceed ed to fire the little willow root (once upon a time) through the uprights no less then three times. Seeing how it was done, Long Legs followed suit with a withering drive to put the score at Gold 5 – Red 1
In four the Reds awoke from their slumber to have both Coach and Canadian Gent score . Gold were three seconds away from another goal when the horn sounded for the end of the chukker leaving the score at a tight 5 – 3 for Gold.
In the last chukker the Red team came to life. Coach Gillespie screamed two long drives through the sticks. Shortly thereafter Celtic Lass took control of a hard fought free ball and gently pushed it through to give Red a total of 6 goals. Golds looked at their 5 goal score throughout the period. It never changed giving Red the hard fought victory of 6 – 5.
