Scone Polo’s Adolfo and Poroto Cambiaso Lead Team to Victory Over Thai Polo NP
With the quarterfinals in sight, Scone Polo captured an important third victory in the Cartier Queen’s Cup, receiving four goals each from Adolfo and Poroto Cambiaso to defeat Thai Polo NP 10-7 on the Duke’s Ground.
Scoring the first two goals in the game and never looking back, Scone Polo led throughout due to a combined attack of goals from the field and the penalty line. After trailing early, Thai Polo NP attempted to fight their way back in the game, outshooting Scone Polo 17-14, but inaccurate 29% shooting from the field while also conceding eight penalty attempts prevented Thai Polo NP from completing a comeback. The father-son duo of Adolfo and Poroto Cambiaso pushed Scone Polo forward with a dynamic attack that ultimately resulted in the 10-7 victory.
A quick start from Scone Polo was led by the efforts of Poroto Cambiaso, who scored the first two goals of the game, but seven combined fouls slowed the pace and allowed Thai Polo NP to provide a response. Juan Martin Zavaleta added a goal from the field, but two missed penalty attempts for Thai Polo NP left Scone Polo ahead by one. An impressive start to the second chukka for Scone Polo quickly resulted in a 5-1 lead on the scoreboard with one goal each from Adolfo Cambiaso, Poroto Cambiaso and Isidro Strada. However, Thai Polo NP showed some resilience with Gonzalito Pieres contributing a goal and an assist before the chukka ended to keep his team within reach. Trading goals in the third chukka, Scone Polo maintained their two-goal lead at 6-4 entering halftime.
Goals from the field proved difficult to come by to begin the second half as both defenses stood strong and made their opponents work for an opportunity at goal. The result was additional penalty attempts on both sides but the difference on the scoreboard remained at two after Adolfo Cambiaso and Zavaleta exchanged penalty conversions. Desperate to close the gap, Thai Polo NP’s Pieres struck first in the fifth chukka, bringing the deficit to just one, but Scone Polo responded with the final two goals of the chukka to thwart the comeback attempt. Shooting at goal every chance they could, Thai Polo NP were only able to convert one of their five shots in the sixth chukka, leading to 10-7 victory in favour of Scone Polo.
Monterosso Polo Team Joins UAE as Only Undefeated Teams
The final two teams to play their third-round game in the Cartier Queen’s Cup, Monterosso joined UAE as the only undefeated team after capturing the 12-8 victory over BP Polo on the Queen’s Ground at Guards Polo Club.
Beginning the game on a 6-1 run, Monterosso built a large lead and effectively managed it throughout, in large part due to the penalty shooting of Ignacio Toccalino. Shooting 100% from the penalty line on seven attempts, including a remarkable 5 for 5 from the 60-yard line, Toccalino pushed Monterosso to their third victory of the tournament. Despite Juan Martin Nero converting all five penalties for BP Polo, their struggles from the field early, scoring just one field goal over the first four chukkas, allowed Monterosso to gain an advantage they would never give up in the 12-8 win.
A crucial opening chukka set the tone for the match with Monterosso overwhelming BP Polo to score the first four goals of the match. A balanced attack produced two penalty conversions for Toccalino, along with one field goal each from Alessandro Bazzoni and David Stirling with Mackenzie Weisz contributing with an assist. Continuing their momentum, Monterosso extended the lead further as BP Polo had yet to record a shot attempt through two chukkas. Finally breaking through in the third chukka, BP Polo generated offense on two penalty conversions from Nero and one field goal from James Beh but faced a 7-4 deficit at halftime.
Resetting during the halftime break, Monterosso prevented BP Polo from closing the deficit any further by relying on the penalty accuracy of Toccalino. Accounting for all three goals in the fourth chukka, Toccalino added two penalty conversions to quickly restore Monterosso’s five-goal lead and leaving BP Polo facing a difficult task with two chukkas remaining. One final push from Nero resulted in two goals and an assist as part of a three-goal fifth chukka, however Monterosso withstood the pressure in the final stages of the game, holding BP Polo scoreless in the last chukka to claim the 12-8 victory.
