CBC Sport Arena Polo World Cup Azerbaijan 2016 about to start
Yesterday, teams were welcomed enthusiastically by members of the local and international press to the Hotel Badamar in Baku, Azerbaijan, in anticipation of the CBC Sport Arena Polo World Cup Azerbaijan 2016 which begins in earnest this evening.
Defending champions Azerbaijan will compete with teams from Switzerland, Spain and Argentina for the World Cup which will be played over three days from, Friday, 9th September to Sunday, 11th September. The CBC Sport Arena Polo World Cup Azerbaijan is being held at the Elite Horse & Polo Club in Baku.
With the iconic Badrutt’s Palace from St. Mortiz providing the VIP hospitality, the event is anticipated to draw large crowds. Similarly, CBC Sport are broadcasting the polo live from Azerbaijan which has created large amounts of interest in the increasingly popular sport from the Azeri people.
Today, local favourites, Gilan Holding (Azerbaijan) will take on Italdizian Group (Argentina) in the first game. The second game will be played between Badrutt’s Palace (St. Moritz) and Bogner (Spain).
About polo in Azerbaijan:
Azerbaijan is known as the birthplace of polo and in 2013, the sport returned to Baku with the Grass Arena Polo World Cup Azerbaijan. In the past three years World Polo organised three successful polo events in the Azerbaijani capital, under the direction of Reto Gaudenzi and in cooperation with the Equestrian Federation of Azerbaijan Republic (ARAF) and the Elite Horse and Polo Club Bina. Following the huge success of the first two years, Baku was last year scene for the first ever FIP Arena Polo European Championship. 2018 the vibrant city applies for the European Championship in grass polo.
