GHANTOOT AND AL BASTI CLASH AT POLO CHAMPIONSHIP

Emirates Open Polo Championship to showcase world class polo at Ghantoot

Under the patronage of H.E. Sheikh Falah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chariman of Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club, Board members and sponsors today announced the details of the annual Emirates Open Polo Championship 2011.

Presented by Al Basti Equiworld, the Emirates Open Polo Championship will see three teams, which between them will field a total of six leading Argentine polo professionals, compete for the trophy from February 4-11.

H.E Saeed Bin Houfan Al Mansouri, Vice Chairman of the club, said: “H.H. Sheikh Falah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan is a passionate supporter of polo and equestrian sport and we are delighted to announce that the Emirates Open Polo Championships will take place again this year in our club. We have three strong teams taking part with Ghantoot, Al Basti and ADCB teams.”

Arun Menon, Director at presenting sponsor Al Bast Equiworld, the region’s leading distributor of equine products, said: “Seeing as the Al Basti Team won the last tournament we are looking forward with excitement to how far we can reach this time. We are very proud to be associated with this prestigious club and would like to thank HH Sheikh Falah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan for allowing us to be part of this tournament.”

The draw for the Emirates Open Polo Championship saw Al Basti polo take on ADCB team in the preliminary round. The grand final will take place on Friday February 11 and will be open to the public.

“The teams have been gearing up for the tournament over the past few weeks. I have seen the other teams practice and I’m sure its going to be a very interesting series of matches showcasing polo at it’s very best,” said Nasser al Shamsi, Ghantoot Polo Captain, and leading UAE polo player.

Emirates Open Polo Championship is one of the oldest polo tournaments in the region, organised by Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club. The event is presented by Al Basti Equiworld, lead sponsored by ADCB and supported by Tom Ford and Abu Dhabi Sport Council.

The qualifying matches will take place on 4th, 6th, 8th and a Grand Final on 11th February. All matches are open and free for the public to attend.
