Faraway wins; will
meet Audi in Haas Cup final
By Alex Webbe
Faraway (Hutton Goodman, Martin Pepa, Santiago Chavanne and
Mariano Gonzalez) rallied for a 13-12 win over CT Energia (Alessandro Bazzoni,
Kris Kampsen, Joao Ganon and Nick Manifold), earning them the right to face
Audi in Sunday’s finals of the Haas Cup, the subsidiary of the Ylvisaker Cup.
CT Energia received one goal by handicap from the 20-goal
Faraway foursome. Brazilian 7-goaler
Joao Gannon ran the score up to 2-0 on a 40-yard penalty conversion, with
Faraway’s Mariano Gonzalez answering back with a penalty goal of his own,
2-1. Ganon closed out the chukker with
another 40-yard penalty goal giving CT Energia an early 3-1 advantage.
The Faraway defense stepped it up in the second chukker,
shutting out the CT Energia attack.
Santiago Chavanne scored twice from the field and tied it up at 3-3.
Gonzalez put Faraway ahead, 4-3, with a penalty conversion
to open the third period, but CT Energia charged right back. Kris Kampsen leveled the score at 4-4 with
his first goal of the game. Gonzalez
scored from the field for a 5-4 Faraway lead, but a penalty conversion from
Ganon had it all even again at 5-5.
Gonzalez scored the final goal of the chukker from the field in the closing
seconds for a 6-5 halftime lead.
Martin Pepa extended the Faraway lead to two goals, 7-5,
with the opening goal of the second half.
Consecutive goals from Ganon (one from the field and the other on a
60-yard penalty conversion) ended the chukker with the teams deadlocked at 7-7.
Ganon put CT Energia back on top, 8-7, with the opening goal
of the fifth chukker. Gonzalez tied it
up, 8-8, on a penalty shot. Ganon
converted consecutive 60-yard penalty shots, 10-8. Pepa scored the final goal of the period to
cut the CT Energia lead back to a single goal, 10-9.
Ganon stretched the lead back to two goals, 11-9, as he
converted another penalty shot for a goal.
Consecutive goals from Chavanne knotted it up again at 11-11. Ganon and Gonzalez exchanged penalty goals to
end regulation play at 12-12, and forcing a sudden-death overtime.
Both teams returned to the field after a brief
intermission. CT Energia took control of
the ball early and drove toward the Faraway goal, but didn’t connect on the
scoring shot. Faraway turned the tables
on CT Energia, and carried the play to their end of the field. A penalty on CT Energia sent Gonzalez to the
penalty lien where he converted a 60-yard penalty shot for the winning goal,
13-12.
Ganon led all scoring with 10 goals (eight on penalty
shots). Kampsen added a goal and the
team received a goal by handicap.
Gonzalez scored five of his team high seven goals on penalty
conversions. Chavanne added four goals
and Pepa scored twice for the victory.
The win boosts Faraway into the final of the George Haas Cup
at noon on Sunday against Audi.
