Fox Sports Arizona is an American regional sports network that was launched in 1996 and is operated as an affiliate of Fox Sports Networks and serves the state of Arizona. The television spot is one of several advertisements fans will be treated to leading up to the event. The debut of the ad also coincides with the Preview Party Monday at the Omni Scottsdale at Montelucia featuring polo stars Julio Arellano of Wellington, Fl. and Ricky Cooper and the Gay Polo League Preview Party featuring Chip McKenney, founder and President of the Wellington-based Gay Polo League.
McKenney will be guest speaker from 6-8 p.m. at Stacy’s @ Melrose in Phoenix, one of the Valley’s most popular gay bars located at 4343 N. Seventh Ave. The Gay Polo League will make history when it makes its debut in the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships: Horses & Horsepower on opening day. Presented by SWAY Events, Echo Magazine and ONE Community, party attendees will get a preview of the polo event and hear the story behind the Gay Polo League from McKenney. Created in 2006, the Gay Polo League is an international organization and only organized gay polo league in the world. The Gay Polo League’s flagship event is the International Gay Polo League Tournament Week which celebrated its fifth anniversary in April with a record five teams in Wellington.
The event was live-streamed worldwide for the first time and featured in a 15-page spread in Polo International Magazine, polo’s premier magazine. Players travel from all over the world for not only the competition but camaraderie. The GPL has four U.S. chapters in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Wellington, where it is based. GPL players come from several countries including France, England, Argentina, South Africa, Canada and Australia. Attendance at the International GPL Tournament has grown from 1,500 in its inaugural year to more than 5,000. Spectators have grown so interested in the sport several have taken polo lessons and attended other polo games. The Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships: Horses & Horsepower event is America’s most attended polo event expected to attract 15,000 polo fans to the Omni Scottsdale Polo Field. The two-day event includes four matches with teams from all different spectrums.
In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, a “Battle of the Sexes” match with top professional women polo players Sunny Hale, the founder of the WCT; Sarah Wiseman of Great Britain, Paola Martinez of Argentina and Caroline Anier of France will comprise the Women’s World All-Star Team against the event’s defending champions, Clogau Wales Polo Team, which last year defeated the U.S. Military team. The following day, an all-star match between top players led by Arellano, a Cardinal Newman High School and Florida Atlantic University alum, and top college polo player Patrick Uretz, will take place along with the USPA Governor’s Cup, commemorating the U.S. Polo Association’s annual meetings. This year’s new additions to the event include the Larsen Live Art Auction, The World Food Championships and The Canine Couture fashion show presented by Applewood Pet Resort featuring Westminster’s “Best in Show.” The event also welcomes back the Arizona Porsche Concours d’Elegance, Ferrari and Lamborghini clubs and over 200 impressive versions of automotive horsepower, creating the best Arizona car party.
