Gold Cup – 06/07/10

Two sides
remain undefeated in Open

By Herbert Spencer

Only two of 20
teams remained undefeated Tuesday as league play in the British Open
Championship neared conclusion at Cowdray Park Polo Club.

Jean-Françoise
Decaux’s La Bamba de Areco, last year’s winners of the Veuve
Clicquot Gold Cup, narrowly beat La Dolfina Polo Ranch 11-10 to hold
onto their perfect 4-0 win record and leadership of League Two.

Victor Vargas’s
Lechuza Caracas also remained unbeatened at the head of League Three,
but it took a penalty conversion Sapo Caset in extra time to give
them their fourth win, over Nick Britten-Long’s Cirencester Park
Polo Club. It was the day’s tightest match, with three of the
regulation chukkas ending in ties.

Meanwhile, Lyndon
Lea’s Zacara came from behind to beat the Albwardy’s Dubai 8-7
and end the long unbeaten record of Dubai’s Adolfo Cambiaso who had
enjoyed straight victories in the Argentine Open, US Open and the
earlier Queen’s Cup in the UK. It was Zacara’s Eduardo Novillo
Astrada who scored twice to give Zacara the lead in the fifth chukka.
Cambiaso converted a penalty shot in the sixth, but time ran out
before Dubai could recover.

Final league games
in the Open will be played Wednesday and Thursday, with
quarter-finals scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
