Gold Cup – Day 3

Gaston V La Magdeleine

Three matches took place at Cowdray Park Polo Club on Thursday 27th as the league stages of the Gold Cup continued to bring the action.

Match 1

It was Gaston who reigned triumphant after their match up with La Magdeleine. A strong start gave them the edge from the first whistle and they remained in the lead throughout, Nero proving why he was 10 goals for so many years.

La Magdeleine had plenty of opportunities to score but were unable to convert more than third of their shots on goal, with 21 shots and only 7 field goals they were peppering the goal but unable to bump up their score leaving them trailing by 5 goals at halftime. Despite a slightly stronger showing in the second half they were unable to catch up and racked up their first loss of the tournament.

Match 2

The second match of the day was a match up between two powerhouse organisations King Power and Black Bears. King Power came out on top after a tense 6 chukkas having led throughout. Both teams had 50% accuracy in front of goal and equal fouls and penalty shots, it was just a case of possession that saw King Power slowly press home their advantage over the 6 chukkas, younger brother Pieres matching up perfectly with Pablo MacDonough to dominate his elder brothers Gonzalito and Facundo. With Estanislao Darritchon in for Top, not even a 1 goal head start was enough for Black Bears to keep on top of this 4 man team.

Match 3

It was Bangash’s first run out in the 2024 high goal season and they were up against Alejandro Aznar’s Marques de Riscal side. Haing played together all season so far, Sapo Caset, Chris Mackenzie and Santiago Cernadas showcased some excellent team polo overpowering the new side and gaining an early lead which they kept throughout scoring a solid 2 goals per chukka to remain in the lead. Bangash also gave away an unfortunate amount of penalty scoring opportunities resulting in an easy win for the Marques de Riscal side.
