Gold Cup – Sunday Polo Action at Cowdray for Day 6

Day 6 of the British Open Polo Championship for the Cowdray Gold Cup saw another fantastic two matches take place in the second run outs for La Dolfina/ Marques de Riscal, Calatagan and La Dolfina/ Scone while Valhalla had their first match of the Uk 2025 high goal season. The teams played for the Jack Gannon Trophy and the coveted Midhurst Town Cup in front of big, Sunday polo crowds.

Match 1:

La Dolfina/ Marques de Riscal stormed ahead early in the match, asserting their dominance in the second chukka with a strong 4 goal performance which put them 7-3 ahead. They maintained this lead throughout, Valhalla unable to stem the flow of goals against them or catch up on the scoreboard. Although it was a great first outing for the Midhurst based Valhalla side, it was a tough start to the tournament to be up against such a strong and established team. With attacking possession heavily in favour of the La Dolfina/ Marques de Riscal side and 11 of 17 shots to goal going in, despite a strong penultimate chukka from Valhalla, it was a done deal and La Dolfina/ Marques de Riscal took home the Jack Gannon Trophy.

Match 2:

A surprisingly low scoring affair, the goal scoring action in this match was limited. With two of the greatest of all time and well known polo rivals (and off the field friends), Facundo Pieres and Adolfo Cambiaso facing off, audiences geared themselves up for a showcase of polo but with the score remaining low throughout with the second half starting at a humble 2-2, it was anyone’s game. The two teams traded single goals for the middle 4 chukkas but Calatagan were able to push home an advantage in the last, scoring twice to seal the win in a hard fought game and raise the Midhurst Town Cup high.
