Hurlingham Club Open – Day 4

On field 6 of Pilar, on Wednesday 1/10, the second semi-final of the 132nd Hurlingham Club Open was played, in which the traditional Ayrshire Cup is at stake.

UAE Polo defeated La Irenita La Hache Clinova by 13 to 9 and reached the grand final of the tournament, a match in which they will face the team of the 40 goals handicap, La Natividad La Dolfina, next Saturday 4/11 at 16.00 on court 1 of the Hurlingham Club.

It was a very even semi-final during the first five chukkers, despite the fact that the UAE team was always cleaner in the defense-attack transition, with an unstoppable number 1 like Polito Pieres was today. After the 8-7 with which the fifth set ended, UAE forced two fouls scored by the scorer of the match, plus another goal by Lukín Monteverde – a great game of the youngest player of the match – to achieve an important four-goal advantage that stretched to six after the seventh.

Almost 20 minutes of net play without converting – between the end of the fifth and the middle of the eighth – was too much for LI LH, which although it burned the ships in the last set, did not get too close on the scoreboard and missed the chance to play the first final of the season, which will have UAE Polo, a team that was better throughout the match and achieved the victory fairly.

Joseph Drysdale Subsidiary Cup

On Wednesday 1/10, on court 4 of the Alfredo Lalor Venue that the AAP owns in Pilar, the second semifinal of the Joseph Drysdale Subsidiary Cup was played, within the framework of the 132nd Hurlingham Club Open, in which the traditional Ayrshire Cup is at stake.

In the match, La Ensenada Clonargen, which once again had Gonzalo Ferrari in place of “Sapo” Caset, beat Sol de Agosto by 19 to 17 and in this way will define against Los Machitos El Refugio the Drysdale Subsidiary next Saturday 4/11 at 11.00 in Pilar, with free admission.

In a very good polo match, full of goals (36), Sol de Agosto started better, which with Benja Panelo as leader and top scorer, took an initial advantage that during the first stage of the La Ensenada match could not overcome. At the end of the first half, the score showed a very even 9-9, but it was in the fifth when the Open Door team, with a great passage from all its members, achieved a very striking 5-0 for what was the match up to that moment and from there they headed for victory.

Although Sol de Agosto got within reach midway through the last period, Jero del Carril, the team’s star in the semifinal, defined the game with a 40-yard penalty kick and gave LE Clonargen a pass to the final of the Subsidiary.
