Inaugural Metropolitan Intervarsity Polo 2013 begins at Tianjin Goldin Metropolitan Polo Club

The First Ever Varsity Polo Tournament in China Showcasing the Most Prestigious University Teams from England and the USA

 

Metropolitan Intervarsity Polo 2013 began today at Tianjin Goldin Metropolitan Polo Club and will be held from 23 to 28 July. Polo teams from the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, Harvard University and Yale University were invited to participate in this tournament to raise awareness of polo amongst the region’s youth.

 

The Club hopes that such tournaments will widen the horizons of Chinese youth and allow them to experience the beautiful game of polo as well as instil in them the values being driven off the back of polo. To inspire and groom young people by promoting the sport of polo to the next generation has been the Club’s polo development initiative.

Metropolitan Intervarsity Polo 2013 also provides a convenient platform for academic, cultural and social exchanges among representatives from the four universities, local students, parents as well as alumni.

 

Today’s matches saw four very talented teams pit their skills against each other in this open tournament. It was Yale University vs University of Cambridge in the inaugural match of the tournament. Dr Richard Caleel, President of the Federation of International Polo, threw in the ball to start the first game.

The first goal of the match was scored by Sam Browne from the University of Cambridge in the first chukka of the match. Yale University fought hard to regain rhythm in the following chukka with a beautiful goal brought in by Rebecca Smith.

 

The University of Cambridge maintained constant pressure on Yale University with Sam Browne demonstrating his power and precision scoring another four goals in the remaining chukkas. This lead was maintained until the final victory at the end, with the final score of 15-1 in favour of the University of Cambridge.
