Dubai bested Audi/Millarville 12-9
In its first season at IPC, the team from Dubai won its debut game, but Audi/Millarville made them work for it. With patron Rashid Albwardy out of the U.S. until tomorrow, Leo Mandelbaum subbed in. Diego Cavanaugh made it look easy, slamming in three goals for Dubai in the first chukker and another two in the fifth.
Audi/Millarville showed slick teamwork in the third chukker, scoring on a play that started and ended with Julian Mannix, interspersed with passes from Nic Roldan and Grant Ganzi. They poured it on as the close of the first half neared, bringing Audi/Millarville to within a point of Dubai (6-5). On a 100-yard shot in the fourth, Roldan tied the game and promptly scored again on a handoff from Fred Mannix, giving Audi/Millarville its first lead. Dubai reclaimed the lead in the final chukker and closed the game with a 12-9 win.
Talented 16-year-old Peke Gonzalez played a big role in Orchard Hill’s tight victory over Valiente, which threatened to go into overtime but ended 11-10. Gonzales made two goals, the latter on an astounding 150-yard run in the final chukker that propelled Orchard Hill into a three-point lead. It was his team’s last score of the game.
Valiente countered with three rapid-fire goals by Santi Chavanne, as Polito Pieres (at one point wielding a decapitated mallet) chased him down at warp speed. But Valiente ran out of time before it could capitalize on its newfound momentum. Pieres and Chavanne were the high-scorers, with seven and six goals respectively.
Villa del Lago Takes 11-7 Victory Over Tonkawa
Villa del Lago led from the start, beating Tonkawa 11-7. It was still a bit of a nail biter as Tonkawa refused to surrender, notching six goals in the last half. Villa del Lago countered with six goals, four from Hilario Ulloa.
Tonkawa, which came into the game with a 0-1 record, needed the win to stay in the tournament, but despite the efforts of Gonzalo Deltour’s five goals, the Villa del Lago middle proved to be too strong. In addition to Ulloa’s four, Guille Aguero was on the board with five goals, including a brilliant shot with less than a minute left in the game.
