Los Machitos and
Coca-Cola earn semifinalist spots in four team shootout

By Alex Webbe

At the end of Sunday’s seven games there were still
questions as to who would be lining up for Thursday’s semifinals of the 2014
Joe Barry Memorial Cup.

Certainly Tonkawa (Jeff Hildebrand, Gonzalito Pieres, Rodrigo
Andrade and Tomas Alberdi) and Valiente’s (Bob Journayvaz, Santi Torres, Sapo
Caset and Roberto Zedda) positions were secured with 3-0 records, but four
teams sat deadlocked with 2-1 records.  A
Monday morning shootout was organized with a representative of each team taking
the field in an effort to capture a playoff spot in the season’s second 20-goal
tournament, with only two of the four moving on.

Facundo Obregon took the field representing Palm Beach
Illustrated; Matias Magrini wore the Los Machitos colors; 10-goaler Pablo
MacDonough lined up for Lechuza Caracas and Julio Arellano wore the Coca-Cola
jersey.

In the end, it was Coca-Cola (Gillian Johnston, Jeff Hall,
Julio Arellano and Nick Morrison) and Los Machitos (Steve Lefkowitz, Sterling
Giannico, Mariano Aguerre and Matias Magrini) who would earn semifinal spots
with Los Machitos playing Tonkawa in Thursday’s noon semifinal while Coca-Cola
earned the right to face Valiente in the day’s 3PM match.

The semifinals of the subsidiary Bobby Barry Cup turned into
a bit of a family affair between the Zennis and the Ganzis.

Jared Zenni’s Palm Beach Illustrated side (Jared Zenni, Facundo
Obregon, Magoo Laprida and Tommy Collingwood) would play Audi (Marc Ganzi,
Carlitos Gracida, Nic Roldan and Nico Pieres) in one of the two 10AM Thursday
Bobby Barry Cup semifinals while Jared’s father, Jim Zenni, would lead Villa
Del Lago/Casablanca (Jim Zenni, Agustin Obregon, Polito Pieres and Inaki
Laprida) against Melissa Ganzi and her Flight Option teammates (Melissa Ganzi,
Fred Mannix, Miguel Astrada and Juan Bollini).
