It was a Bank Holiday Monday in the UK today and so action continued in the Cartier Queen’s Cup. Park Place Vaara, in search of their first victory, were up against Sujan Indian Tigers. A strong first chukka from Park Place Vaara resulted in an early 3-1 advantage after two penalty conversions from Hilario Ulloa and a field goal from Santos Merlos. The remainder of the first half featured open polo and few whistles with Park Place Vaara inching further ahead by three. Sujan Indian Tigers fought back within two by the end of the first half behind a balanced team effort that saw a Penalty 4 conversion from Francisco Elizalde and field goals from Jaisal Singh and Ned Hine, who was playing in place of his younger brother Louis. Exiting the half, Ulloa produced two quick goals, while holding Sujan Indian Tigers off the scoreboard, to hold a four-goal advantage with two chukkas remaining. Foul trouble then provided Sujan Indian Tigers with the opening they needed, sending all three penalty attempts through the post in the fifth chukka. Drama continued into the sixth when Martin Podesta was injured and had to be subbed by Toly Ulloa. This disruption did not stop the Park Place Vaara team though as they completed a 12-9 triumph to register their first victory of the tournament.
A highly anticipated match concluded play for the day with an undefeated King Power meeting Scone Polo at Noel Farm. King Power struck first with back-to-back goals from Jeronimo del Carril and Nico Pieres. Before the end of the first chukka though, Poroto Cambiaso brought the game even at 2-all with a Penalty 2 conversion and a goal from the field. Picking up where he left off, Poroto Cambiaso added his third goal of the game for Scone’s first lead, but King Power provided a swift response. Scoring four of the next five goals in the match, three off the mallet of Del Carril, King Power held a slim, one-goal lead (6-5) entering the half-time break. Scone quickly regrouped and tied the score, but King Power turned to del Carril, who continued to be a standout player in the match. Adding two field goals, bringing his total to six on the day, del Carril lifted King Power ahead by two, but the match was far from over. Scoring all but two of Scone Polo’s goals, Poroto Cambiaso ignited his team’s comeback with the score tied at 9-9 entering the sixth chukka. Little separated the two teams in the final minutes with the score remaining tied and Scone Polo facing their second sudden death scenario in a row after defeating La Magdeleine in their first game on Friday. After several minutes of up-and-down play in extra time, Pieres found himself on the receiving end of a pass from del Carril to fire through the golden goal, delivering a thrilling, 12-11 victory for King Power.
