Next Generation Continues Strong Play in Cartier Queen’s Cup Victory
The lone game on the sixth day of the 2020 Cartier Queen’s Cup featured another strong performance from Next Generation in open play, defeating Segavas 11-9 at Guards Polo Club.
Receiving three field goals each from Diego Cavanagh and Poroto Cambiaso, Next Generation overwhelmed Segavas from the field, producing an efficient attack with nine field goals on 60% shooting. Adolfo Cambiaso distributed the ball effectively, collecting four assists while efficiently manning the #4 position in Next Generation’s victory. Joaquin Pittaluga impressed for the second game, scoring seven goals, including five for six shooting from the penalty line, but the accurate attack of Next Generation led them to victory.
A slow start to the game saw just one goal from each team, with Segavas maintaining their one-goal lead on handicap. Looking to apply early pressure, Segavas produced more opportunities at goal but were unable to convert from the field with Pittaluga scoring their only two goals from the penalty line in the first and second chukka. The third chukka proved to be the most decisive chukka of the match, with Next Generation dominating possession and building a large lead. Two field goals each from Cavanagh and Poroto Cambiaso contributed to an impressive 5-0 chukka in favour of Next Generation, turning a one-goal deficit into a 7-3 lead at halftime.
The second half saw the umpire’s whistle blown four times in the fourth chukka, resulting in two penalty goals for Pittaluga and one for Cavanagh as Segavas looked to fight their way back within reach. Containing the Next Generation attack from the field allowed Segavas to chip away at the deficit, relying on Pittaluga’s fifth and sixth goals of the match to pull within two. After a scoreless fifth chukka, Adolfo Cambiaso scored seconds into the final chukka to extend his team’s lead to three, leaving Segavas with little time to complete a comeback. Despite conceding two goals in the final minutes, Next Generation completed the 11-9 victory to improve to 2-0 in the tournament.
