By Alex Webbe

Paige Boone led The Villages home team with four goals Sunday afternoon as they dismantled a powerful Land Rover entry in the Women’s World Cup at The Villages Polo Club in Central Florida Sunday afternoon in front of a capacity crowd.

Built around America’s highest-rated woman polo player, Sunny Hale, The Villages made its way to the finals by scoring a hard fought 7-6 overtime win over Citizens on Friday, with Hale leading the way with four goals-including the overtime score.

Land Rover received one goal by handicap but two goals from Paige Boone had The Villages quickly on top.  Hale converted a penalty shot in the second chukker which was countered by a penalty goal from Land Rover’s Malia McCoy.  The Villages left the field after the first two chukkers with a precarious 3-2 lead.

Meagan Scanlon tied the game for Land Rover with a goal in the third chukker before Boone’s third goal of the game gave the lead back to The Villages, 4-3.  Kim Von Stade converted a penalty shot to end the chukker with the teams deadlocked at 4-4.

In the fourth chukker Sunny Hale reminded everyone why she was the highest rated female player in the world for years as she scored two consecutive goals from the field to give The Villages a 6-4 lead.  Moments later, Boone iced it with her fourth goal of the game for the 7-4 victory.

Boone led all scoring with four goals.  Hale scored three times in the win.  The defense of The Villages held Malia McCoy to a single goal following her five-goal production against Citizens on Friday.  Teammates Von Stade and Scanlon added single goals in the loss.

CITIZENS 7, MORGAN STANLEY 4

In earlier World Cup action the pink jerseyed Citizens team took the consolation match with a 7-4 win over Morgan Stanley.

Fussell began the second chukker with another penalty conversion followed by a goal from the field from teammate Angela York.  Morgan Stanley was held scoreless and Citizens left the field with a 3-2 edge.

Kate Weber provided an offensive spark for Morgan Stanley in the third period as she scored from the field, but two consecutive goals from Angela York provided all the offense Citizens would need as it stretched its lead to two goals, 5-3.

Williams scored her second goal of the game for Morgan Stanley in the fourth chukker but two penalty conversions from Kristine Dalton gave Citizens the game, 7-4.

York led Citizens with three goals.  Fussell and Dalton each added a pair of goals in the win.  Williams led the Morgan Stanley team with two goals.  Weber scored once and they received one goal by handicap.
