Lechuza Over Pony Express 8-7
By Alex Webbe
Victor Vargas’s Lechuza Caracas team defeated a determined Pony Express foursome, 8-7, in the day’s second Gold Cup semifinals. The Lechuza victory creates the second match-up of Audi and Lechuza in a tournament final this year.
Earlier this month Audi scored an 8-7 win over Lechuza in the finals of the C. V. Whitney Cup. Now Lechuza will get an opportunity to atone for the loss.
Lechuza jumped out to a comfortable 6-2 halftime lead but Pony Express fought its way back into the contest with three unanswered goals in the fourth chukker to cut the lead to one, 6-5.
The teams each scored a couple of goals in the fifth period, leaving Lechuza on top, 8-7. Defense was the keynote of the final chukker, as neither team could score and Lechuza held on for the one goal win.
Thursday’s high-goal action will feature the semifinals of the Butler Handicap with Zacara meeting Las Monjitas at 10:30am followed by a 3pm contest between White Birch and Orchard Hill.
