2009 Monty Waterbuty Cup–7

Barrington and Goose Creek Score Wins, Will Meet in Monty Waterbury Cup Finals

By Alex Webbe

Barrington scored a 13-12 win over MavOffice.com in Thursday morning’s opening semifinal match of the 2009 USPA Monty Waterbury Cup in Aiken to secure a berth in Sunday’s finals.

Barrington received one goal by handicap from MavOffice and quickly built up a 3-1 lead before ending the chukker with a 4-2 Advantage.

Second chukker goals by Antonio Galvan, Julio Arellano and Tommy Biddle put Barrington on top 7-2 before Horacio Onetto finally got MavOffice on the scoreboard to end the period in a 7-3 hole.

Onetto scored the first goal of the third chukker but was quickly answered by Biddle.  Julian Daniels cut the lead to 8-5 with his first goal of the game before Galvan closed out the scoring to give Barrington a 9-5 halftime lead.

Both teams reined in their offenses in the fourth chukker, with a single field goal by Daniels accounting for all of the scoring in the period.  MavOffice inched closer but still trailed, 9-6.

Barrington returned to the field in the fifth chukker with a look of determination as Arellano scored three straight goals from the field to give them a commanding 12-6 lead.  Biddle closed the scoring with a single goal for the 13-5 advantage with one chukker left to play.

MavOffice came alive in the final period of play, but it was a case of too little, too late.

Daniels scored the first two goals of the chukker followed by two goals from Onetto.  Daniels added another goal before Onetto accounted for the final MavOffice score in the 13-12 loss to Barrington.

“We need to play more than two good chukkers in a game like this,” said Daniels of the MavOffice team effort.  “We’re close, but we’re not there yet,” he added.

GOOSE CREEK 13, PONY EXPRESS 8

The 19-goal Goose Creek contingent received one goal by handicap, and looked like they were going to need it as the found themselves on the downside of a 7-6 halftime score against a game Pony Express foursome.

Four goals from Pony Express 9-goaler Matias Magrini and two from from Pablo Avalos had them up 6-4 at the end of two chukkers as Goose Creek struggled to get back into the match, as they relied on penalty shots in two of their first three goals.

Goals from Martin and Cote Zegers in the third frame narrowed the gap to a single goal as the Goose Creek held Pony Express to a single penalty goal by Tomas Goti.

Magrini’s fifth goal of the game extended the Pony Express lead to two goals, 8-6, but that would be about the time the wheels would start to come off the wagon for Bob Daniels’ team.

Goose Creek responded with five unanswered goals in the fifth period as they tied the game at 8-8 and then rode off to an 11-8 lead at the end of the chukker.

The miserly Goose Creek defense shut out Pony Express for a second consecutive chukker, holding them to a single goal in the entire second half, as they took the game 13-8.

Martin Zegers led all scoring with six goals.  Teammates Adam Snow and Cote Zegers added three goals apiece.  Goose Creek received one goal by handicap in the win.

Magrini set the pace for Pony Express with five goals.  Pablo Avalos scored twice and Tomas Goti added a goal.

The win will put Goose Creek in Sunday’s finals of the 2009 USPA Monty Waterbury Cup against the undefeated Barrington team, a team they fell victim less than a week ago in a high-scoring 17-16 affair.
