On September 14, 1922, after a merger of the River Plate Polo Association (founded in 1892) and the National Polo Federation (1921), the Argentine Polo Association was created. There were great and visionary leaders in both entities and it took little time to unite them. These leaders, in 1927, together with those of the War Horse Commission, ordered the construction of the famous courts 1 and 2 of Palermo inaugurated in 1928, which became the scene of incredible conquests worldwide and local and international historical records, earning the world name of “World Polo Cathedral”, certified by all technical and embellishment advances, which continue to be carried out by the men led by its current president, Delfín Uranga.
After winning the English and United States Opens in 1922, Argentina entered the world map of this difficult sport and shortly after, thanks to the exceptional quality of our players and horses, Polo conquered, for the first time in the history of our country, an Olympic Gold medal, in Paris 1924, a conquest that it repeated at the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936. Last opportunity in which our sport participated in the world’s top sporting event
Precisely in 1936 a resounding superiority over the United States would be born. The third version of the Americas Cup has been held by Argentina after winning from the fourth to the seventh in 1950, 1966, 1969 and 1979 in Buenos Aires and the eighth and last in 1980 in San Antonio, Texas. That is why the huge trophy rests in the display cases of the AAP offices, installed under Grandstand A of the Argentine Polo Field.
In addition, Argentina is the team that won the Polo World Cup the most times in the men’s category, with 5 titles; and in 2022 she managed to win the first Women’s World Cup, demonstrating that, in this sport and proudly, Argentines are the best on the planet.
The “great polo family” is nourished annually with unique tournaments such as the National Intercircuits with Handicap for the “Argentine Republic” Cup, the Argentine Youth Open, the incredible National Junior tournaments and the intercollegiate tournaments for the Santa Paula and New Zealand Cups, which then take their protagonists to the highest world interclub tournament. the Argentine Polo Open, which also annually puts the finishing touch to the dispute for the honorary Triple Crown of Argentine polo, which also includes the Tortugas Country Club and Hurlingham Club opens, as well as the most important women’s tournament on the planet, born in 2017: the Argentine Women’s Polo Open.
Led by men and women of polo, who before being leaders have been polo players, the Association tried – and always succeeded – to overcome the waves produced by differences in positions, logical in human becoming. For this reason, the desire to excel does not stop. This is demonstrated by all the expansions and improvements made in Palermo – a venue that is open 365 days a year and that today has an exceptional gastronomic walk – and in the greatest heritage of the AAP, its magnificent complex of courts located in its Alfredo Lalor property in Pilar, equipped with the greatest technical advances.
