Queens Cup – 21/05/09

Broncos Victorious over Salkeld in Thursday’s only Queen’s Cup match

Santiago Chavanne was the hero of the hour, scoring the winning goal for Broncos in the dying seconds of the sixth chukka.  It was also Santiago who scored the opener for Broncos, in the game held at Trippetts Farm, yesterday.  However, Salkeld pulled back and took the lead by the end of the first chukka.

The might of Santiago Chavanne and Pablo MacDonough combined meant that Broncos re-took the lead at the end of the second chukka. Rob Archibald managed to fall off two seconds into the second chukka, but without any major consequence.  By half-time Broncos were leading Salkeld 5 – 3.

The fourth chukka started with another goal by Chavanne, but then Salkeld woke up and hammered in four goals, two from Rob Archibald. Suddenly, Broncos had a real fight on their hands with the scores standing at 7-6 to Salkeld.

Max Routledge and Santiago Chavanne both scored for Broncos in the fifth chukka, showing some great teamwork and some seriously fast, open polo.  There was everything to play for going into the sixth, and with a further goal from Chavanne, it looked as if the Broncos had victory in the bag. They had reckoned without the two goals from Salkeld’s Marcos Di Paola and Jose Donoso, levelling the score.  It was a magical goal from the stick of man –of-the-match Santiago Chavanne that saved the Broncos’ bacon. Final score: 10 -9.

There is only one match today (Friday), between Dubai and Zacara at Guards Polo Club at 3pm. There is a question mark over whether Adolfo Cambiaso will play. He has pulled a riding muscle and although he is receiving physio, a decision will be made shortly before the start of play today. Watch this space!
