Isla Carroll Wins Cup in OT

In a hotly-contested, back and forth game, Isla Carroll rallied to tie the game in regulation time before going on to win the 2009 USPA Kay Colee Memorial Cup in overtime Sunday afternoon on the grounds of the Grand Champions Polo Club in Wellington.
Isla Carroll scored the first two goals of the game on scores from Melissa Ganzi and a penalty conversion from John Goodman as Barbarossa Leather countered with a single first chukker penalty goal from Leo Mandelbaum.
The pace continued to build in the second frame with Mandelbaum scoring from the field for Barbarossa Leather while Melissa Ganzi answered with another goal from the field for Isla Carroll. Barbarossa Leather trailed after two chukkers, 3-2.
A penalty goal from Joey Casey in the third was followed by a goal from the field from Goodman, with another Barbarossa Leather goal coming from Greg Keough to knot it at 4-4 to end the first half.
Three goals from Isla Carroll in the fourth chukker gave them a 7-5 lead, as Barbarossa Leather was held to a single Casey goal.
Casey led the Barbarossa Leather charge in the fifth chukker with three straight goals while shutout defense held Isla Carroll scoreless, giving Barbarossa an 8-7 lead after five chukkers of play.
Kampsen converted a penalty shot and scored once from the field to open the final chukker of play as Isla Carroll took a narrow 9-8 edge. Mandelbaum came back to score a goal from the field and convert a penalty shot, as Barbarossa reclaimed the lead, 10-9.
With seconds remaining in regulation play, Kampsen took advantage of a Barbarossa penalty and converted the shot to tie the game at 10-10 and force the overtime.
In the opening two minutes of the sudden-death period, Isla Carroll’s Juan Bollini took control of the ball, galloped down the field with it and pushed it through the goal posts for an 11-10 overtime win.
Isla Carroll’s Kris Kampsen and Barbarossa Leather’s Joey Casey led all scorers with five goals apiece.
ENDEAVOR CAPITAL 8, BOCA DEVELOPERS 7
In earlier action, five goals from Marc Ganzi helped lead Endeavor Capital to a last minute 8-7 win over Boca Developers in the consolation round of the Colee Memorial Cup.
The teams were tied at 4-4 at the end of the first three chukkers of play, with Ganzi accounting for three of the team’s goals. Stevie Orthwein added a goal in the Endeavor effort. Boca Developers relied on three first half goals from 5-goaler J. J. Celis. Trevor Allen scored one first half goal from the field.
The fourth and fifth chukkers ended in ties as each team battled for each score. The fifth period ended with the teams deadlocked at 6-6.
Celis gave Boca Developers a 7-6 advantage, but a goal from Marc Ganzi evened it at 7-7 before Larry Austin’s winning goal gave the game to Endeavor Capital.
