Land Rover and The Villages Advance in Women’s World Cup

Sunny Hale scored four goals, including the winning overtime goal, as The Villages took a 7-6 game from a talented Citizens polo team Friday afternoon at The Villages Polo Club in Central Florida in the opening round of the Women’s World Cup.
The Villages led 5-3 at halftime before Citizens rallied to tie the game at 6-6, on the strength of two goals from Angela York and Kristine Dalton’s second goal of the game. Hale scored The Villages’ only goal of the second half before going on to notch the winning goal in the sudden-death overtime chukker.
Sunny Hale, America’s highest rated woman player, led The Villages with four goals. Erika Woods scored twice and Susan Fredericks added a goal in the win.
Angela York set the pace for Citizens with three goals. Kristine Dalton scored twice and they received one goal by handicap.
LAND ROVER 10, MORGAN STANLEY 5
In the later game, Marla McCoy scored five goals as Land Rover rolled over Morgan Stanley 10-5 to qualify for Sunday’s finals against The Villages.
Morgan Stanley received one goal by handicap and fought to a 3-3 tie with Land Rover after the first chukker of play, but after that it was McCoy and Meaghan Scanlon who drove Land Rover to victory.
Scanlon scored her third goal of the game in the second chukker while McCoy chipped in her first two goals of the contest while the Land Rover lineup held Morgan Stanley scoreless in the second chukker.
McCoy converted who penalty shots in the third period while Morgan Stanley got a single goal from the field from Paige Beard. Jennifer Williams scored the final goal of the match for Morgan Stanley while Land Rover got single goals from Scanlon and McCoy to ice the cake.
McCoy’s five goals led all scoring for the afternoon. Scanlon added four goals to the Land Rover total and Kim Von Stade accounted for a goal.
Kate Weber scored twice for Morgan Stanley. Teammates Williams and Beard added single goals and they received one goal by handicap.
The Women’s World Cup action will continue on Sunday, November 1 with Morgan Stanley meeting Citizens in the consolation match while Land Rover meets The Villages in the championship match.
