Just one game today but another golden goal in extra time – this time from the stick of Black Bears’ John Paul Clarkin.
League Three
Black Bears 11 – 10 La Bamba De Areco
This year is exactly 20 years since the Black Bears team first won the Queen’s Cup. The patron then was Urs Schwarzenbach but this year it is his son Guy who is heading up the Bears and he started his 2013 campaign with a win. However they left it to the last minute and a golden goal from New Zealand international John Paul Clarkin to secure this victory. It was a really close game throughout the six chukkas with La Bamba and the Bears struggling to give themselves a bit of breathing space in the scores. La Bamba could not even capitalize in the third chukka when the Black Bears failed to score at all. Only Gonzalo Pieres found the flags in this period but his goal only gave them a one goal advantage going into half time. The second half was played in similar vein and with scores level, 7-7, at the end of the fifth and 10-10 at the end of the sixth, extra time was assured. This makes four out of the seven league matches already played concluding in extra time – surely some king of record and a great testament to the quality of all the teams in this year’s Cartier Queen’s Cup. As professional player Richard Le Poer tweeted last night: “ Cartier Queen’s Cup is going to be tremendously close this yearâ€.
