Deauville Silver Cup

After the magic moments that we were able to live at Polo de Deauville during “The Revenge” of the Open d’Argentine on 1st of August, the polo season continues with the Silver Cup (Coupe d’Argent) at Deauville’s hippodrome. The semi-finalists that will face each other next Wednesday (Silver Cup Final on Saturday, 15th August) are now determined.

But let’s get back to this historical “Revenge” for just an instant, as it is worth mentioning its transmission by three big sports channels: Eurosport and its Asian branches, Universal Sports in the United States (transmitted by Horse.tv) and ESPN in South America. Eurosport’s president Laurent-Eric de Lay was particularly delighted with this live broadcast in 102 countries that has been followed by more than two million spectators. With a network of such extent “The Revenge” could be watched on all continents either live, or – in the cases of Asia and Australia – slightly delayed.

In Argentina the regular audience of the Open d’Argentine were able to see this match on their usual channel, the popular ESPN+. The Argentinean daily newspaper LA NACIÓN presented the rematch under the title “Un partido para la historia” with a photo of the two teams in front of Deauville’s town hall, followed by two pages that were signed by Xavier-Pietro Astigarraga, the journal’s polo specialist who had been sent to Normandy for the match.

The day after “The Revenge” continued with the less spectacular yet not unexciting beginning of the Silver Cup. The “star” of the first match had also been the hero of “The Revenge”: Guillermo Terrera, La Dolfina’s replacement for Lolo Castagnola. Naturally, young Terrera has lead “his” team Talandracas into the final where he will have to face the second finalist Mungo with Ignacio Toccalino, equally a handicap 7.

The Silver Cup Final is on Saturday, 15th of August at 5.00pm. http://www.pololine.com/../specials/arg/04/img/varios/1x1.gif
