A golden goal by 10-goaler Adolfo Cambiaso gave Rashid Albwardy’s struggling Dubai a 14-13 extra time win over Joachim Gottschalk’s Les Lions Sunday in their league match for the Cartier Queen’s Cup at Guards Polo Club.

Having earlier won one and lost one in their league, Dubai looked in serious danger of being eliminated from the tournament as Les Lions built up impressive leads during the first five of the six regulation chukkas.

Les Lions led 3-2 at the end of the first period and increased their advantage to 7-3 in the second. Scoring was equal in the third chukka, leaving Les Lions 10-6 ahead at halftime.

Gottschalk’s side increased their lead to 12-7 in the fourth chukka. Dubai finally rallied in the fifth period, outscoring Les Lions four to one, but Les Lions retained the lead 13-11.

Dubai held Les Lions scoreless in the sixth chukka and two goals by Ignacio Heguy tied the match and pushed it into extra time, when Cambiaso scored the winner.

Meanwhile, Adrian Kirby’s Cortium remain undefeated in the tournament with a 12-11 win over Belmont Farm, having previously beaten both Dubai and Les Lions. In a third league match, Karan Thapar’s EFG Bank Aravali downed Amr Zedan’s Saudi Zedan 8-6.

Monday’s league games will be El Remanso v Sumaya and Enigma v La Bamba de Areco, both at Guards Polo at Coworth Park.
