ENGLAND AND USA PREPARE FOR BATTLE IN “POLO’S RYDER CUP”

ENGLAND AND USA PREPARE FOR BATTLE IN “POLO’S RYDER CUP”

Countdown begins to the Westchester Cup – the highlight of the 2013 Audi International Series

The most intense rivalry in world polo is about to explode – as USA captain Nic Roldan officially challenges England captain Luke Tomlinson for the Westchester Cup, polo’s oldest and most prestigious trophy, as part of the Audi International.  Hot on the heels of the Andrew Murray and British Lions victories, let’s hope for another British win!

The showdown between holders England and the USA will be staged at one of the finest polo grounds in the UK, Guards Polo Club in Windsor Great Park, on Sunday 28 July 2013.  It will be the first time the two great rivals have met on these shores to contest the Westchester Cup since 1997.

Roldan and his team are desperate to snatch back the famous old trophy – often referred to as “polo’s version of the Ryder Cup” – from Tomlinson’s grasp and whisk it back across the Atlantic.  England and Tomlinson will have other ideas – and recent history is behind them. The USA enjoy an overall lead in the series, which began back in 1886, by ten victories to England’s six – but England has won the last two meetings in Florida in 2009 and at Guards Polo Club, near Windsor, back in 1997.

The match is the flagship fixture of this year’s Audi International Polo Series – which also includes England fixtures against South Africa and Australasia – and is an integral part of 2013’s magnificent summer of world-class sport which also includes Wimbledon, Henley Regatta, the Ashes and the Open golf.

Tomlinson will be joined on the England team – which has been supported by Audi since 2005 – by his younger brother Mark, James Beim and, in keeping with the traditions of the Westchester Cup, a Commonwealth player in the New Zealand star John Paul Clarkin.

The Equus & Co. USA team consists of some of the world’s most talented players and will see Nic Roldan as captain, supported by Marc Ganzi, Mike Azzaro and Polito Pieres.

The Audi International is a public event – in the past, the ‘highlight’ of the polo season has attracted large crowds of around 20,000 spectators.  For grandstand tickets, hospitality or Boujis after party tickets, please contact:
