Fourteen teams to contest the 2015 Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup for the British Open Polo Championship

Cowdray Park Polo Club announces that fourteen teams have entered the 2015 Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup for the British Open Polo Championship. The Draw to decide matchplay in the opening league phase of this year’s Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup takes place today 8th June.

Returning to defend the title of British Open Champions is Ali Albwardy’s Dubai team featuring the world’s leading player Adolfo Cambiaso.  2014 saw Dubai claim a fourth victory in the world’s most important tournament at 22 goal level.

An impressive debut was made in the 2014 tournament by the King Power team of Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha, who reached the Final in his first ever entry of the Gold Cup. His side returns in 2015 as King Power Foxes with Gonzalito and Facundo Pieres, and a second team, King Power, has been entered by Top’s brother Apichet ‘Tal’ Srivaddhanaprabha.

Winners in 2011 and 2013, Lyndon Lea’s Zacara team also makes a welcome return.  El Remanso is another team which has featured strongly in the tournament in recent years, reaching the Final in 2012.

Other teams re-entering the British Open Championship are the HB Polo side of Sebastien and Ludovic Pailloncy, Nick Clarke’s Salkeld team which includes Jaeger-LeCoultre Ambassador Luke Tomlinson, Edouard Carmignac’s Talandracas and Harald Link’s Thai Polo team as well as UAE.  Apes Hill Club returns after several years’ absence with three British players lining-up alongside Argentine 9 goaler Eduardo Novillo Astrada, also an Ambassador for Jaeger-LeCoultre.

Brand new to the tournament are Michael Bickford’s La Indiana side, Ben Soleimani’s RH Polo and Dr Hilali Noordeen’s VPS Healthcare Sifani.

Chris Bethell, Polo Manager for Cowdray Park, comments: “We are delighted that fourteen teams have entered the 2015 Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup, indicating once again the stature of the British Open Polo Championship in world terms.  Tonight I am seeding the four semi-finalists of the Cartier Queens Cup and then every other team will draw for a place in three leagues. I guarantee every team four league games, and the top eight, determined by points and goal difference, go forward to the quarter finals leading to the final knock-out phase of the British Open tournament.

Zahra Kassim-Lakha, Director UK Market and Global Strategy says: “We are thrilled to have taken on the title sponsorship of this world-class tournament. In 2015 the Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup for the British Open Polo Championship will embrace the historic roots of polo in which the Maison has been a stakeholder since 1931 when the iconic Reverso watch was specially designed for its players.”

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Gold Cup for the British Open Polo Championship opens on Tuesday 23rd June when the Carlos Gracida Memorial Trophy will be contested.  Quarter Finals take place over the weekend of 11/12th July, Semi Finals on Wednesday 15th July and the Final on Sunday 19th July.
