Gold Cup wins for Sumaya, Salkeld

By Herbert Spencer

Oussama Aboughazale’s Sumaya and Nick Clarke’s Salkeld gained comfortable victories in the latest league matches for the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup in Cowdray Park Polo Club’s British Open Championship Thursday.

Sumaya beat  Roger Carlsson’s Billingbear Park 14-9 in a somewhat lack lustre game at Cowdray Park’s Amersham grounds. Sumaya was spearheaded by 7-goaler Carlos Gracida who had won the Gold Cup a record 10 times when he was a 10-goal player. They kept the lead throughout the match, but neither team managed to score in the last chukka.

Sumaya’s win made them one of the League Four leaders along with Alfi Marchini’s Loro Piana, the reigning champions.

Salkeld’s 13-9 victory over La Dolfina Polo Ranch at Amersham still left them behind the League Two undefeated leaders, the Hanburys’ El Remanso and Jean-François Decaux’s La Bamba de Areco.

The Albwardys’ Dubai, with Adolfo Cambiaso, are the clear leaders in League One of the 20-team tournament, still with a 2-0 win record. League Three is currently led by Jerome Worth’s Enigma and Victor Vargas’ Lechuza Caracas, both undefeated. Enigma leads all the other teams in goal difference with an impressive 13 points aggregate.
