Gold Cup – 27/06/10

Enigma swamp Cirencester Park 17-7

By Herbert Spencer

Jerome Worth’s Enigma handed Nick Briiten-Long’s Cirencester Park Polo Club the worst defeat thus far in the British Open for the Venue Clicquot Gold Cup, smothering them by a staggering 17 goals to 7.

With just over a quarter of Gold Cup days now completed, Enigma is one of only two sides in the 20-team competition to have a clear win record. Having just squeaked by in their first match against Ed Magor’s Panthers, this time they played a much more aggressive and attacking game to dominate Cirencester Park on Cowdray Park’s River Ground, with the score already 10-3 at half-time.

Enigma has two of England’s national team players in their line-up: 7-goaler James Beim and 6-goaler Malcolm Borwick, with Argentine 8-goaler Mathias MacDonough in the No. 3 position. They are coached by former 9-goal international Julian Hipwood who was captain of England for 20 years before relocating to the USA.

Worth’s team is likely to have a tougher match to win when they meet Victor Vargas’ Lechuza Caracas next Saturday.

In the day’s earlier match, the Hanury’s El Remanso beat Nick Clarke’s Salkeld 11-7 on Cowdray Park’s Lawns Ground. El Remanso, with brothers Charlie and George Hanbury, is the other team undefeated thus far.
