Dubai beat Les Lions in extra time

By Herbert Spencer

Adolfo Cambiaso scored the golden goal Tuesday to give the Albwardys’ Dubai a 14-13 win over Joe Gottschalk’s Les Lions Tuesday after Les Lions pushed their British Open league match into extra time.

Dubai should have had an easier time against Les Lions who lost all three of their games in the earlier Queen’s Cup, although they fell by only a single goal to Dubai then. Dubai went on to win Queen’s.

Dubai led by 2 points at half-time in Cowdray Park Polo Club’s Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup qualifier at Les Lions Farm, but the Gottschalk squad, led by Eduardo and Ignacio Heguy, rallied and equalized at 8-8 in the fourth chukka. The see-saw scoring was equal through the next two periods, so the regulation six chukkas ended 13-13, with Cambiaso providing Dubai’s winner with a field goal in the seventh.

The match left Dubai the League One leaders with a 2-0 win record, but with two teams from each league going into the quarter-finals, Les Lions with a 1-1 standing is still in the running.

Meanwhile Lyndon Lea’s Zacara squeaked by Fabian Pictet’s Emerging 7-6 at Cowdray Park’s Amersham 1 ground and Victor Vargas’ Lechuza Caracas dominated Edouard Carmignac’s Talandracas 12-5 at Great Trippetts.
