Lechuza I Wins in Wanderer’s Classic; 12-Goal Pro-Am Continues

By Alex Webbe

Lechuza I flexed its muscles in its opening game of the 2011 Wanderer’s 14-goal Classic Sunday morning by powering past Pony Express/Detroit Blues 11-6.

All of the first chukker scoring was done via penalty shooting, with Toto Collardin and Matt Coppola converting penalty shots for Lechuza I, countering a single penalty goal by Pony Express/Detroit Blues 4-goaler Nick Snow.  Lechuza snuck out to an early 2-1 lead.

Two more goals from Collardin extended the Lechuza I lead to 4-1, as a stingy defense kept the Pony Express/Detroit Blues players off of the scoreboard.

Single goals from Collardin and Coppola had Lechuza taking a 6-2 halftime led.  Pony Express/Detroit Blues was held to a single goal from Snow in the third as they struggled to find any offense.

The teams traded goals in the fourth, with Gaston Lisioli scoring for Lechuza I while Tomas Goti scored from the field to try and keep Pony Express/Detroit Blues within striking distance.  Lechuza held a commanding 7-3, and Pony Express/Detroit Blues had few answers to Collardin and company.

Collardin added two more goals in the fifth (one penalty, one from the field), but Pony Express/Detroit Blues responded with goals from Snow and Colin McCosh.  Pony Express/Detroit Blues wasn’t gaining any, but they weren’t losing ground.  They entered the final chukker of play needing four goals to tie with Lechuza looking less than accommodating.

Snow’s fourth goal of the game opened the final chukker of regulation play, but Lechuza answered back with single goals from Francisco D’Agostino and Collardin for the 11-6 final.

Collardin led all scoring with seven goals.  Coppola added two goals and Lisioli and D’Agostino scored one goal apiece in the win.

INTERCOASTAL CHALLENGE 12-GOAL RAGES ON

EFG Bank 10, Valiente/Blanco 8

EFG Bank and Jan Pamela/Little Owls score opening wins as the 2011 Intercoastal Challenge 12-Goal Pro-Am kicks off.

In Sunday morning’s opening match of the 2011 Intercoastal Challenge 12-Goal Pro-Am, a balanced attack had EFG Bank downing Valiente/Blanco 10-8.

EFG Bank got a pair of opening goals from Whistle Uys and a single goal from Melanja Jones in the opening chukker with Santiago Botaro accounting for the sole Valiente/Blanco score.  EFG Bank carried an early 3-1 lead into the second chukker.

Goals from Valiente’s Bob Jornayvaz and Uys offset one another in second period play,  EFG Bank held on to its two goal lead, 4-2.

EFG Bank’s Carlucho Arellano scored the only goal of the third chukker as defenses tightened on both sides of the field.  The teams left the field at halftime with EFG Bank leading by a 5-2 score.

Defenses continued to dominate the fourth chukker with scoring coming at a premium.  Jeff Blake converted a penalty shot for Valiente/Blanco and Josh Shelton responded for EFG Bank with a goal from the field.  The chukker ended with EFG Bank ahead, 6-3.

As quickly as fortunes of the game turn, Botaro led a Valiente/Blanco in the fifth by putting up three unanswered goals and knotted the score at 6-6.  It was the Valiente/Blanco foursome that kept EFG Bank off of the scoreboard, and the outcome of the game was coming down to one chukker.

Bottaro did his part, adding two more goals to the Valiente/Blanco total, but EFG Bank more than responded.  Two goals from Shelton and single goals from Arellano and Melanja Jones proved to be the difference as EFG Bank rebounded for the 10-8 victory.

Botaro led all scoring with six goals.  Teammates Blake and Jornayvaz scored one goal apiece in the losing effort.

Uys and Shelton scored three goals each for EDFG Bank with Arellano and Jones pitching in two goals apiece in a winning effort.

Wanderer’s Cup action will continue on Saturday, January 15 with a 10:30 contest between the Hawks (1-0) and Lechuza (1-0).  A second match between Bendabout/First View (0-1) and Pony Express/Detroit Blues (0-1) is slated for noon.

Jan Pamela/Little Owl 8, Mt. Airy/Willow 6

Steve Dalton and Joe Wayne Barry combined for seven goals to carry Jan Pamela/Little Owl over Mt. Airy Willow, 8-6 in the 2011 Intercoastal challenge Sunday afternoon.

First chukker goals from Dalton and Barry were countered by a single goal from Mike Egan for a 2-1 lead after the opening chukker.

Wayne Garrison accounted for the only goal of the second chukker as errant passes and missed scoring opportunities were complimented by disciplined defensive work on both sides.

Barry added a goal from the field in the third followed by a 60-yard penalty conversion from Dalton.  Mt. Airy/Willow failed to mount any successful attack for the second consecutive chukker, and Jan Pamela/Little Owl carried a comfortable 5-1 lead off the field with them at the end of the first half.

Garrick Steele scored his first goal of the game to open the fourth chukker for Mt. Airy/Willow, but Dalton’s third goal of the game kept the Jan Pamela/Little Owl 4-goal lead intact.  The period ended with Jan Pamela/Little Owl leading, 6-2.

The fifth period belonged to Mt. Airy/Willow, with Brandon Phillips converting a pair of penalty shots for goals and teammate Adrian Wade blasting the ball through the Jan Pamela/Little Owl goal.  Mt. Airy/Willow had cut the lead to a single goal, 6-5 going into the sixth chukker.

Dalton scored the first goal of the sixth chukker on a penalty shot and Phillips countered for Mt. Airy/Willow with a goal from the field.  Barry sealed the deal with his third goal of the game for the 8-6 final score.

Intercoastal Challenge play will continue on Sunday, January 16 with Mt. Airy/Willow (0-1) facing EFG Bank (1-0) at 10 am followed by a noon contest between Jan Pamela/Little Owl (1-0) and Valiente/Blanco (0-1).
