MUSEUM OF POLO ANNOUNCES 2015 INDUCTEES FOR POLO HALL OF FAME
Mr. George DuPont, Director of the National Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame, is pleased to announce that the Board of Directors has approved the recommendation of the Nominating Committee to induct four men and two horses into the Hall of Fame this coming February; Juan Carlos Harriott, Stephen “Laddie” Sanford, Fred P. Mannix, Michael C. Sifton, and the polo ponies Katrina and Sue Ellen.
A statement issued by the Chairman of the Nominating Committee, Dr. Horace Laffaye, says of the inductees, “The Nominating Committee of the Polo Hall of Fame has selected outstanding players and magnificent horses.
Juan Carlos Harriott, Jr., a 10-goal player for 20 years, is widely considered one of the top players in the history of the game. Stephen “Laddie” Sanford took five U.S. Open Championships between 1926 and 1949, among numerous tournaments world-wide. Two Canadian players were recommended for the Hall of Fame Philip Iglehart Award for their contributions to polo. Frederick Mannix, Sr. has been a life-long player and supporter of the game in both the United States and Canada. Michael Sifton has been a strong force on behalf of the Polo Training Foundation through the years and a stalwart figure in Toronto. Two of those indispensable partners, the polo ponies, were also selected. Katrina was a pony played by the great Hall of Famer Tommy Hitchcock Jr. in many international matches in the 1930s. The great mare Sue Ellen is also being honored. She was bred in Wyoming by 10-goaler Tommy Wayman, who played the mare for many years. Sue Ellen is now the property of Ignacio Figueras.
I wish to thank all the members of the Nominating Committee who worked hard and long in selecting these fine representatives of the ancient game of polo.”
The induction ceremony, a gala event, will be held at the Museum of polo on February 13th, 2015 and is the most important fundraising event for the Museum each year, so we hope you will help support your Museum – a 501 (c) 3, not-for-profit organization. If you would like to join in the celebration to welcome the new inductees into the Polo Hall of Fame, you may purchase seats for the dinner up to a week in advance. Reservations are $200.00 each (tax deductible portion $100.00).
