      The 2009 Hall of Fame Champions Cup is just one of only eight stops on the Outback Champions Series tour. This year’s tournament features eight tennis champions competing over four days for $150,000 in prize money. Come see Hall of Famers Jim Courier, Mats Wilander and defending Champion Pat Cash battle it out with Todd Martin, Mark Philippoussis, Wayne Ferreira and Mikael Pernfors, August 20-23 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, RI.

    Polo Series + Red Cross Team Up = Hurricane Cup

            August 22, 2009, Newport, RI:  … The home team, Newport, will take on a regional rival in the annual Red Cross Hurricane Cup on Saturday, August 22 at 5 pm to benefit the RI Chapter of the American Red Cross for hurricane and other disastier relief and preparedness programs which include emergency supplies & services, and training of over 1000 volunteers The American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides health, safety and relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies such as fires, floods, power outages, hurricanes and other crises.
             “In the past, our supportive fans and sponsors united to help us raise over $5,000 in cash for victims of Hurricane Katrina on one occasion, and over $1,000 lbs of emergency supplies on another occasion for hurricane victims in Jamaica, and last year over $1,100 in cash was raised through the sale of bottled water and raffle tickets by volunteers who manned two inflatable ’air shelter’ tents displayed with information available on Hurricane Preparedness.  Raffle prizes were awarded at the match, including a Bose Wave Stereo.  Dan Keating, founder and president of the Polo Series stated, “we believe that every little bit helps, and combining our resources with the American Red Cross will multiply our results in the future to give greater help to those in need.”

              Tickets to the matches are sold at the gate on the day of the match.  Tailgate picnics on the lawn are welcome with General Admission of $10.00 for adults, and children 15 & under are free.  Bleacher-style seating in the grandstand is also available with General Admission.   Tickets for box seating in the Subscribers Enclosure are also sold at the entry gates for $15/person. Reservations are only given for tables for parties of 8 or more by purchasing the tickets in advance. 
               Location:  The Polo Series takes place on the polo grounds of Glen Farm, 715 East Main Road (Route 138) in Portsmouth, RI, six miles north of downtown Newport.  
              Place a carry-out order for your tailgate pincnic from Max’s Market in Newport for platters, hors d’oeuvres and elegant snacks to bring to Polo.  At the matches, you will find the convenience of tableside seating and choices of hot and cold food concessions and a full service bar on site, for your enjoyment.  The Twisted Pony Bar is known for its craft beer selection, premium spirits and collection of boutique wines from all over the universe.  Bluepoint offers a mouthwatering raw bar at the International matches, and Grillmasters offers a weekly menu of grilled fare.   Catering  platters can be ordered in advance from Max’s Market (849-8088), Grillmasters (Jerry Palmer or Meg Kolb at 683-4155) or Bluepoint (Maureen/Paul 781-2723) to place an order for an upcoming match.
              But if you prefer your own cooking, then pack a tailgate picnic and cooler with iced down beverages to be doled out to the group huddled around the tailgate of your SUV.  Whatever your choice, it can be consumed from field-side blankets and lawn chairs just a few feet away from the polo action.
             Entry gatreMatches in June, July and August begin at 5pm and matches in September begin at 4pm and last about two hours.  The sprawling lawn and surrounding fields offer an opportunity for dog-lovers to bring their 4-legged friends along on a lead for the afternoon, and Moms swear it’s the only activity their teenage kids are still willing to do with the rest of the family.  Grills are permitted but coals and trash are carry-in-carry-out.  Attire is smart-casual.  Shopping for unique souvenirs includes hand-painted signature jewelry from Angela Moore to accessorize any sundress;  handbags inspired by the sea from She Shells, and official apparel of the Newport International Polo Series.
