La Bamba de Areco beat El Remanso for place in Queen’s Cup semis

By Herbert Spencer

Jean-François Decaux’s La Bamba de Areco rallied to defeat the Hanburys’ El Remanso 12-11 in extra time Saturday (5 June) and earn a place in the semi-finals of the 22-goal Queen’s Cup.

For much of the match at Zacara’s private ground, it looked like El Remanso might revenge their earlier defeat by La Bamba in the leagues. The 21-goal Hanbury team started with a point on the scoreboard and kept the game tight to hold the advantage, but by never more than a goal or two.

By the sixth chukka, however, La Bamba were three goals down before the 10-goal Pieres brothers caught fire, scoring successive goals to equalise and take the lead. El Remanso’s 9-goaler David “Pelon” Sterling then equalised again just before the bell to push the game into extra time.

In the sudden death seventh chukka, a try by El Remanso’s Sterling bounced wide off a goal post before La Bamba’s Facundo Pieres passed to his brother Gonzalito who scored the golden goal.

Young George Gemmel substituted for La Bamba’s patron Decaux, sidelined after a bad fall Monday.

In an earlier match at Guards Polo Club, Max Gottschalk’s Les Lions II beat Jerome Wirth’s Enigma 11-8 to move into the semi-finals.
