Three teams triumph by only single goals in Queen’s Cup round
By Herbert Spencer
The 14-team Queen’s Cup tournament again saw narrow wins Tuesday (May 25) in three league matches at three separate grounds.
At Guards Polo Club, Jean-François Decaux’s La Bamba de Areco defeated the Hanburys’ El Remanso 11-10 in a match that went close to the wire.
La Bamba is the only team in the Queen’s Cup with two 10-goal stars, brothers Gonzalito and Facubdo Pieres. El Remanso, fielded by non-playing patron Christopher Hanbury, also features brothers: Christopher’s sons Charlie (4) and George (1) with rising Uruguayan star David “Pelon†Sterling (9) as their linchpin.
El Remanso received a goal on handicap to start, but three field goals by the Pieres brothers gave La Bamba a first chukka advantage. El Remanso equalised in the second and briefly took the lead in the third. La Bamba then stayed ahead, but never by more than one or two points. El Remanso’s Jaime Huidobro and Sterling last scored late in the sixth chukka, but the rally came late to avoid defeat.
La Bamba and Dubai are now the leaders of the tournament with two wins each.
Meanwhile, Alfio Marchini’s Loro Piana registered their first win of the tournament by beating Eduardo Carmignac’s Talandracas 12-11 at Great Trippetts in West Sussex. And at Les Lions Farm, The Telegraph defeated Joe Gottschalk’s Les Lions 11-10 to chalk up their first win.
