ROBBERY AT PULLMAN GALLERY, 116 MOUNT STREET, MAYFAIR
THURSDAY 18TH DECEMBER 2008
In the early hours of Thursday December 18th, the Mount Street Mayfair location of the Pullman Gallery opposite the Connaught Hotel was raided by thieves. They gained access by smashing through a glass panel in the front door between the hours of 2.00 am and 5.00 am.
They opened a display cabinet and stole a quantity of rare, vintage car radiator mascots and historically important museum-quality Sterling silver trophies, predominantly related to the sport of polo, in particular the 1896 ‘Polo Challenge Cup’ and the 1899 ‘Rockaway Ladies Cup’ by Gorham & Co. A 5 page contact-sheet of images of some of the most significant items stolen is attached in PDF format. The ‘Polo Challenge Cup’ is shown with a black base, which the thieves left behind.
In addition, they stole a unique Mercedes-Benz candelabrum dated 1937, presented to Rudi Caracciola, bearing the engraved facsimile signatures of Caracciola, Hermann Lang, Manfred von Brauchitsch and Bernd Rosemeyer to the base, but dropped the star finial (shown on the top of the candelabrum) as they exited. They also took a marble and a stylized silvered bronze sculpture ‘Caracciola’ by the french sculptor Emmanuel Zurini.
These are all extremely distinctive pieces, and we are offering a reward to anyone who can provide information that leads to the recovery of these items. In the event of seeing or being offered any of these pieces, please contact Rachel Kelly at Pullman Gallery on 020 7930 9595 for the purposes of forwarding the information to the Police.
Many thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to offer.
