SaraBoca in President’s Cup Finals

By Alex Webbe

The battle between Woodlawn and SaraBoca in the finals of the 2011 President’s Cup qualifier final at the International Polo club was nip and tuck through the first five chukkers before SaraBoca broke loose for a 14-11 win in the final chukker of play.

Ruben Coscia scored the first two goals of the game for Woodlawn, but SaraBoca fought back with a pair of goals (one from the field, one on a penalty shot) from Raul “Gringo” Colombres to tie it up at 2-2.  Coscia converted a penalty shot to end the chukker with Woodlawn holding on to a 3-2 lead.

Wesley Finlayson tied it up for SaraBoca in the second with a goal, but Woodlawn responded with single goals from Coscia and Omar Cepeda.  The period ended with Woodlawn expanding its lead to two goals, 5-3.

SaraBoca put up three straight goals to open the third, two from Colombres and a goal from Finlayson for a 6-5 lead.  Coscia answered the bell for Woodlawn, however, and delivered the tying goal.  The first half ended with Woodlawn and SaraBoca deadlocked at 6-6.

Two more goals from Colombres were met by single goals from Cepeda and Coscia, and after four chukkers the score remained all even at 8-8.

Consecutive goals from Colombres in the fifth were answered by a pair of goals from Woodlawn’s Coscia.  The teams were locked in a 10-10 tie after five chukkers of play with neither looking like they were ready to concede.

The final chukker, however, belonged to SaraBoca.  Colombres and Finlayson added two goals apiece in the final period while Cepeda scored Woodlawn’s only goal of the chukker.  When the final horn sounded, it was SaraBoca with the 14-11 win.

Colombres led all scoring with ten goals, and received MVP honors for his efforts.  Finlayson added four goals for the win.  Colombres took home the Best Playing Pony award, as well, for Kumbia.

The National Finals of the USPA Presidents has been scheduled to be played on Saturday, April 16 at 1pm when SaraBoca will face Lazy T, the Boca Raton winner.
