Polo and snow in Cortina, a successful marriage


 


From Sunday, February 15th to Saturday 21st, 5 high-goal  polo-teams will be competing once again in Italy on the frozen surface of Lake Misurina (1800 mt. ) to win  the Cortina Winter Polo AUDI Gold Cup 2009.


The exclusive tournament, now celebrating its 20th anniversary , has gained its place among the best in the world: a glamour week of spectacular, top level games and exciting eventsLive will be ensured by world-class Argentinian players and the breathtaking Dolomite sceneries surrounding the  frozen polo field.


In the year 2009 the tournament is one of the three  eventsLive, with Courchevel (FRA) and St. Moritz (SUI), in the exclusive World Polo Tour on Snow, just created and inspired by the more famous World Polo Tour* (WPT).      


Polo on snow is a must in the winter calendar of major eventsLive in the Dolomites.


The games are played at an altitude of 1800 metres, on the soft blanket of snow that covers the frozen surface of the vast sheet of water sorrounded by the immaculate peaks of the Sorapis and Cristallo mountains and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The tournament has reached international status for some time now. Year after year, more and more fans come, planning their winter breaks around this fascinating event.


This time too, five teams will be giving life to the tournament and a great performance will be assured by a large number of outstanding Argentinian champions, in seven days of captivating matches.


The friendly village stretching along the lakeside, with the sponsors’ hospitality areas, the Polo Restaurant tended by top class chefs of “El Toulà”, the Polo Bar and panoramic balcony, offer guests the comforts of wine and gastronomy, warmth and a perfect view, while the seats around the edge of the field allow the public easy enjoyment of the matches.


The first polo experiment in Cortina d’Ampezzo was in 1989. The initiative was the idea of three Roman friends who shared a passion for polo, and the owner of the historic Hotel de la Poste which is still the club house for the event. At the time matches were played on Lake Landro, on the main road between Cortina and Dobbiaco, with the sole facility for the public being an Alpine military tent in which the only refreshment was an excellent mulled wine…
