St Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow

The 26th edition of this most traditional of polo tournaments will be taking place between 28th and 31 January 2010.

Over the last 25 years, St. Moritz Polo AG has created a tournament with international renown, ensuring the participation of the world’s best polo players and attracting more than 20,000 spectators to the famous frozen lake.

The St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow 2010 promises to be a high goal tournament of the highest calibre, with all teams playing to an exceptionally high standard: Cartier, Brioni, and Bank Julius Baer play with a team handicap of 22, the Maserati team with a handicap of 21. Pablo MacDonough (Argentina), one of the world’s best polo players with a handicap of 10, will be among the competitors at the event.

The annual St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow is not just a top-class fixture in the sporting calendar, but also an exclusive social event at which personalities from the spheres of industry and politics as well as leading social figures gather in a unique atmosphere on the frozen lake. The four team sponsors will be represented at the event by top brass from within their ranks, including Bernard Fornas (CEO Cartier), Andrea Perrone (CEO Brioni), Raymond J. Bär (Chairman of the Board of Directors of Julius Baer Group Ltd.), Boris F.J. Collardi (CEO of Julius Baer Group Ltd.), Gian A. Rossi (Member of the Executive Board of Bank Julius Baer) and Piergiorgio Cecco (Managing Director Maserati Germany, Austria and Switzerland).

This event takes place under the slogan “Engadin/Graubünden” and will very much focus on the region. The decor is inspired by the mountains of Graubünden and guests will be well catered for with regional specialities served up by three of the region’s top chefs – Andreas Caminada, Roland Jöhri and Reto Mathis.

Musical entertainment will be provided by the young Swiss Alpine horn player Eliana Burki. The 26-year-old is revered as a genuine virtuoso who can unlock original jazz-funk sounds from this traditional Swiss instrument.

The event organisation, St. Moritz Polo AG has also taken the opportunity presented by the tournament’s redesign to develop a new energy concept. The heated tent space on the lake will now be reduced by a third, and the energy requirement will increasingly be drawn from renewable sources. Furthermore, the infrastructure will be more equally divided over the lake surface, optimizing the weight burden and therefore making the event less dependent on the strength of the ice on Lake St. Moritz.
