SUPER SIXTEEN SIGN UP FOR CARTIER QUEEN’S CUP AT GUARDS POLO CLUB

World’s best prepare to play in leading high-goal competition

Sixteen high-goal teams will play in The Cartier Queen’s Cup competition in 2012. The world’s greatest players, including Adolfo Cambiaso, Gonzalito and Facundo Pieres, Juan Martin Nero and Pablo MacDonough, will be in action at Guards Polo Club over the next three weeks, playing at the top of their game to ensure that it is their patron who steps forward to receive the historic silver Queen’s Cup from HM The Queen.

From this year, this world-class competition will be sponsored by Cartier, the “King of Jewellers”. Cartier has a long-standing tradition of supporting polo around the globe, including 27 wonderful years of sponsoring polo through the Cartier International Day. Arnaud M. Bamberger, Executive Chairman, Cartier UK comments, “Although we felt it was time to change the formula to one which is more tournament focused, we are  honoured to uphold our loyalty to the sport of polo with the Queen’s Cup becoming the Cartier Queen’s Cup and therefore allowing us to continue our long-standing relationship with Guards Polo Club.”

The President’s Draw for the Cartier Queen’s Cup was held this evening for the first time at the Cartier New Bond Street boutique. Although the current holders of The Queen’s Cup, Edouard Carmignac’s Talandracas are returning to defend their title, they will face some stiff opposition. Not least from the recent US Open winners, Lyndon Lea’s Zacara and from Jerome Wirth’s Enigma, who reached the finals last year. It would also be unwise to rule out Dubai, once again featuring the World’s Number One Cambiaso. He holds the record for the most Queen’s Cup victories and will be delighted to add to that tally.

With such depth of talent on the field The Cartier Queen’s Cup will create many memorable high-goal matches. HM The Queen first presented her cup in 1960 and this tournament has seen HRH Prince Philip play in the final and HRH Prince Charles go one better and win the trophy.

The first matches of the 2012 competition will begin on Tuesday 22 May. After three weeks fast paced games, the leading four teams will head to the semi-finals on 13th June 2012. The tournament concludes four days later with a memorable final, historically played in the presence of HM The Queen, on Sunday 17th June 2012 at Guards Polo Club, located in the heart of Windsor Great Park.
