The Barclays Japan Cup 2015

The Barclays Japan Cup 2015

Celebrates its fifth year with the only all-Japanese polo team in the world playing in Singapore and traditional mounted archery performance

After a successful introduction to the Singapore polo and high society social calendars in 2011, the Barclays Japan Cup has gone from strength to strength and celebrates its fifth year with  the ONLY all-Japanese polo team in the world and the traditional mounted archery performance.

Preliminary polo matches will take place on Saturday 29th August and the finals on Sunday 30th August.

The main match of this event will, as in previous years, be an all Japanese visiting polo team, POCARI SWEAT, will face off against the Barclays team comprising of Singapore Polo Club members.  Pocari Sweat Team patron is Taro Otsuka, who has played in all previous years and is supported by team captain Hiro Suzuki from the United Kingdom and the father and daughter combination of Hiro and Akiko Kume from Malaysia. There will also be a subsidiary match – one that promises to be every bit as exciting –  between ROYAL SALUTE and the SINGAPORE POLO CLUB.

The Throw-In will be performed by the Guest of Honour,  H.E. Haruhisa Takeuchi, the Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Singapore, together with the Club President, Rickard Hogberg.

On both Saturday and Sunday, mounted archers will perform a Yabusame performance. Yabusame is the traditional Japanese form of mounted archery dating back well over a thousand years. A Yabusame archer will gallop down the sandtrack, controlling the horse with his knees, draw an arrow and shoot his bow twice at targets placed inside the field. Yabusame is characterised as a ritual rather than a sport and is performed in Japan at special events, this will be the third time Yabusame will be demonstrated at the club.

The event will welcome dignitaries, celebrities and business leaders for a weekend of sport and glamour. In addition to the high-level socialising and networking over Royal Salute whisky, Stella Artois beer and Japanese and Western canapés, our guests will get to watch some good polo and  at the same time, enjoy the performances of the Taiko Drum, Cheer Dance by Albirex and Yabusame.

All guests are encouraged to dress for the occasion!   The Best Hat and Best Dressed couple will stand to win  one of the two ( 2 ) nights Malacca or Kuala Lumpur Cruise  ( Wednesday )  for 2 persons in a Window Cabin on  SuperStar Gemini, sponsored by STAR CRUISES.
