The King Power Gold Cup – Day 6

El Remanso Remains Undefeated with Victory Over ALFI Investments

The lone game of the day on the sixth day of play in the 2018 King Power Gold Cup featured another strong performance from El Remanso in an 11-8 victory over ALFI Investments at Cowdray Park Polo Club.

In a game that saw a combined 36 shot attempts, the fast-flowing pace of play produced opportunities for both teams, yet El Remanso and ALFI Investments shot 32% and 29% respectively from the field. Using a strong end to the first half, El Remanso outscored their opponents 5-2 in the second and third chukkas, allowing them to build a lead which was maintained throughout the second half. Effective teamwork saw all four El Remanso players score at least two goals to finish with the three-goal victory.

An even first chukka saw both teams produce one goal, with Oliver Cudmore and Jack Hyde scoring for their respective teams. El Remanso found their stride in a strong second chukka, led by the work of Charlie Hanbury, who completed a long run and quickly followed it up with a goal from the throw-in to give his team the early 4-2 lead. ALFI Investments struggled to overcome the organized El Remanso defence, recording just two goals on their seven shot attempts in the opening half. James Harper and James Beim capitalized on two ALFI Investments turnovers in the third chukka to further extend their lead to 6-3, as El Remanso took control of the scoreboard in a cleanly played half that saw just four total fouls.

Holding their three-goal advantage, El Remanso maintained that lead in the fourth chukka, matching ALFI Investments goal for goal, as both teams scored a goal from the field and the penalty line. ALFI Investments pushed to close the deficit in a strong fifth chukka that saw Nico Pieres take advantage of five El Remanso fouls to convert both of his penalty attempts. The uncharacteristic chukka of fouls for El Remanso was cleaned up in the final chukka, where El Remanso continued their passing attack to shoot at goal five times. Despite making zero of those five attempts, El Remanso was able to seal the victory with two penalty 2 conversions for Cudmore, while holding ALFI Investments was unable to mount a comeback in a final chukka that saw them fail to find the scoreboard. With the victory, El Remanso improves to 2-0 in the King Power Gold Cup, as they look ahead to Friday’s matchup against 2-0 Valiente.
