Titleholders Zacara win British Open league game

Lyndon Lea’s Zacara took their second league match Tuesday when they defeated Jerome Wirth’s Enigma 13-12 in the British Open Championship for the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup at Cowdray Park Polo Club.

Zacara, winners of the 2011 Open, took an early lead, ending the first chukka 3-1 in front and leading 5-3 in the second period. Then three goals by 10-goaler Juan Martin Nero and a fourth by Matias MacDonough put Enigma ahead 7-6 at halftime.

Scoring was equal in the fourth chukka, leaving Enigma still in the lead 10-9. Zacara denied Enigma any goals in the fifth period and Ignatius Du Plessis scored two to recapture the lead for Zacara 11-10.

Nero scored two for Enigma in the sixth chukka equalled by goals from Du Plessis and Hilario Ulloa, leaving Zacara the winners by a single point at the final bell.

Zacara’s Du Plessis was high scorer of the match, notching up nine goals. Nero scored eight for Enigma. 

In the other league game of the day, James Packer’s Ellerston downed the Hanbury’s El Remanso 14-13.

British Open league matches Wednesday are Dubai v La Bamba de Areco and EFH Bank Aravali v Sumaya.
