G-Oil and Prima score wins

By Alex Webbe

A balanced G-Oil attach had every member of the team scoring in a one-sided 9-2 win over hapless Catena in the 0-2 goal competition in the WCT Finals at the International Polo Club in Wellington Thursday afternoon.

Catena received one goal by handicap but fell behind almost immediately with Tiffany Busch scoring two first chukker goals (one from the field and one via a penalty shot).  Catena had no success breaking through the G-Oil defense as they fell behind 2-1 in the opening chukker.

G-Oil got second chukker goals from Erica Gandomcar, Busch and Cecelia Cochran for a 5-2 lead, with Catena getting on the scoreboard on a 40-yard penalty conversion from Atlanta’s Jolie Liston.  It would prove to be Catena’s final goal of the contest as G-Oil outscored Catena 4-0 in the remaining two chukkers.

Busch had four goals in the G-Oil win while teammates Gandomcar and Cochran scored two goals apiece.  Kate Vanoff scored once.

Liston accounted for all of the Catena team scoring with a single goal.  But G-Oil ended up as the big winner with a convincing 9-2 win.

PRIMA 7, The Villages 5

Alina Carta got Prima on the scoreboard early in the 3-6 goal competition, but The Villages answered back with a goal from England’s Tamara Vestey to knot it up at 1-1.  Tiffany Busch closed out the scoring in the opening chukker with a penalty goal, and Prima left the field with a one goal, 2-1 lead.

The pace quickened in the second chukker, with scoring at a premium.  After several botches runs at goal by both sides, Cecelia Cochran ended up scoring the only goal of the chukker as Prima extended its lead to 3-1 at the end of the second chukker.

Four straight goals from The Villages in the third chukker had them on top, 5-3 with Vestey picking up two goals and Erica Gandomcar and Natascha Baecher accounting for single goals.  Busch got Prima in the scoring column before the period ended with her second penalty conversion of the day.  At the end of three chukkers of play, The Villages held a 5-4 lead.

The fourth and final chukker was all Prima as Jamaica’s Lesley Ann Masterton Fong-Yee notched her first goal of the game.  Single goals from Cochran and Busch rounded out the Prima were complimented by “lights-out” defense as Prima rolled to a 7-5 win.

Vestey led The Villages offense with three goals.  Teammates Gandomcar and Baecher scored single goals in the loss.

Busch scored three times for Prima.  Cochran added two goals with Carta and Fong-Yee chipping in single goals in a winning effort.
