The crowd was on their feet as Horseware/5 Star Builders/Tackeria defeated La Indiana 11-10 in overtime in the 20-goal YIvisaker Cup at the International Polo Club Palm Beach. With less than a minute left Matt Coppola tied the game. Former 10-goaler Mike Azzaro rolled a 40-yard penalty shot through the posts a minute into the seventh chukker to win the game.
“I hit the approach shot well, luckily right in front of goal,” said Coppola, who was named Most Valuable Player. “It was a really, really good feeling. We had a pretty rough start, but we fought back and we never gave up. We have a really good role model in Mike (Azzaro). He pushed us as a team. We have only had two practices together, so the team is going to get much better.”
The newly formed team chased La Indiana the entire game. Horseware/5 Star Builders/Tackeria rallied from a four-goal deficit in the fifth chukker and inched their way to within one point after Azzaro converted three consecutive penalty shots in the sixth.
Samba, owned by Zacara and played by Ruki Baillieu, was named Best Playing Pony.
The game was live streamed by ChukkerTV, a partner of the USPA Polo Network.
